Getting help from the police

Taking matters further

The police may refer the case to the Crown Prosecution Service who may decide to prosecute (take your partner to court) if they believe that there is enough evidence to get a conviction.

If your (ex) partner pleads guilty you would not have to go to court to give evidence. You may, however, be asked to give a 'victim impact statement' to describe the effect the abuse has had on you which will be considered when the court decide on what sentence to give.

If your (ex) partner pleads not guilty The Crown Prosecution Service (C.P.S.) may ask you to go to court and give evidence for the Crown. There is a specialist (voluntary sector) domestic violence advocacy service in Barking and Dagenham (and some other areas) which can support you throughout every stage of this process.

The dedicated officer assigned to your case will give further details regarding the advocacy service. You will also be asked whether you would like support from a Victim's Support worker.
