Getting help from the police
What to expect when you (ex) partner is arrested
If your partner is arrested the police will ask you (and sometimes other witnesses) to make a statement about what has happened. The police may also suggest that you see a police doctor (medical examiner) to record any injuries that you may have sustained.
They may decide to charge your (ex) partner with a criminal offence. The police should inform you about whether your (ex) partner has been charged and should also let you know if he has been released. He may be released from police custody even if he is charged with an offence.
Sometimes the police may issue someone who has committed a domestic violence offence with a formal police caution instead of charging them. If your (ex) partner accepts a caution then he is admitting his guilt and this creates a criminal record even though it does not result in a criminal conviction.
