Leaving home
Going into a refuge
What type of accommodation is available?
The type of accommodation offered varies from refuge to refuge. Some refuges are able to offer families small flats within the refuge but most provide one shared room for each family with communal kitchen, bathroom and living room facilities. This means that you will probably be sharing communal areas with a number of other families in the refuge.
Although this means that you will not have much space and/or privacy in the refuge it also means that you may get to know other women and children in the refuge quite well. Some women and children find the communal atmosphere very supportive and are able to make friends with others who may have been through similar experiences.
