Will they accept anyone?

Almost all refuges are women only and most (though not all) will not accept boys over the age of 13 or 14. This means that they will not be suitable for women who have teenage sons. If you have a teenage son or are unable to stay in a refuge for some other reason you can still get help and support from refuge workers without living in a refuge.

Many refuges will not take women who have serious drug and/or alcohol dependencies and/or mental health problems. Contact the main Domestic Violence Helpline for further information in this area and for information about other specialist services. Some refuges may be able to work with women with additional support needs on an outreach basis even if they cannot offer a space in the refuge.

Most refuges now provide outreach services to women outside the refuge. If you are staying in your local area you can contact your local refuge outreach service. If you are moving to another type of temporary accommodation (e.g. accommodation provided by a local authority) you can contact the refuge outreach service in that area for support. You can get information about local refuge services from the National Domestic Violence Helpline or from local information services.
