Homeless Applications

What do I do if my application has been turned down?

If your homeless application is turned down you have the right to appeal this decision but must do so within 21 days. You may wish to consult with a solicitor or with an advocate (e.g. a Shelter advocate). You can contact Shelter for further advice on telephone 0808 800 4444 or have a look at their website.

If you are made an offer that you think is unsuitable you can appeal the suitability of the offer within 21 days. You may wish to use an advocate (as suggested above) to support you in this.

Do not turn the offer down as they local authority will then have no further duties towards you and you will be classified as "intentionally homeless".

NB You must act within 21 days to make either type of appeal. If you have good grounds for an appeal do not give up as a number of appeals result in positive outcomes for applicants.
